An angry crowd gathered outside the Bagram military complex in Afghanistan when local workers on the base reportedly found copies of the Koran in rubbish bags tagged for incineration. Some of the religious books had already been partly burned. The US military commander, General John Allen, issued an unqualified public apology, and also ordered an investigation.

Despite international concerns about the secrecy of its drone campaign in Afghanistan and the borderlands of Pakistan, the US military is buying more Predator and Reaper drones, and speeding up the training of the crews to remotely pilot them. Soon to surpass manned aircraft as the biggest combat weapon system in the US Air Force, armed surveillance drones are increasingly used by combatant commanders, instead of risking ground units and soldiers.

Both sides of federal politics condemn a video that shows a former Afghan army trainee boasting about his attack on Australian soldiers.
The video posted online by a jihadi network shows an interview with Mohammed Rozi, who shot and seriously wounded three Australians who were training him at a patrol base in Uruzgan province in November.
He said he had one thing on his mind that day: killing foreigners and teaching them a lesson.
